Asian Auto Repair in Richmond, VA

Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda and their luxury brands are everyday work in our bays. Maintenance on the schedule that matters, honest diagnostics and tires that fit how you drive.

Japanese and Korean cars are everyday work here

Our European specialty gets a lot of attention, but a big share of what rolls through our bays every week is a Camry, a CR-V, a Rogue, a Tucson or an Outback. We service and repair Asian makes as routine work, from oil changes and brakes to check engine lights, cooling systems and suspension, with the same diagnostic process and the same up-front pricing. You approve the work first, every time.

That covers the whole range: Toyota and Lexus, Honda and Acura, Nissan and Infiniti, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, Subaru, Mazda and Mitsubishi. Commuter sedans, family crossovers and minivans, Tacomas and Frontiers, and the hybrids that are now a normal sight on Richmond roads.

Why these cars last, and what keeps them that way

Most Japanese and Korean cars are built to run a long time on simple, consistent maintenance. The catch is that "low maintenance" gets read as "no maintenance", and the expensive failures usually trace back to a service that got skipped years earlier. These are the items that matter most:

  • CVT fluid. Many Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Kia models use a continuously variable transmission. Some makers call the fluid "lifetime" or set long intervals, but CVTs are sensitive to fluid condition, and a fluid change is far cheaper than a transmission. Shudder, a whine or a delay when pulling away are signs to have it checked.
  • Timing belt or timing chain. It depends on the engine. Honda and Acura V6s, older Toyota and Lexus V6s, older Subaru four-cylinders and some older Hyundai and Kia engines use a belt that has to be replaced on a mileage and age schedule, usually with the water pump. Most newer four-cylinders use a chain that's meant to last, as long as the oil is changed on time.
  • Coolant. These makers use long-life coolants that are often color-coded by brand, and topping up with the wrong type can shorten the life of water pumps and gaskets. We use the coolant your engine calls for.
  • Brake fluid. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes ABS parts from the inside. Many makers call for a change every two to three years, and it's one of the most skipped services there is.
  • The right oil, on time. Many newer engines specify 0W-20 or even 0W-16. Thicker oil isn't extra protection on these engines; it can upset variable valve timing and cost fuel economy.

Make by make

Toyota and Lexus

Known for going 200,000 miles and beyond, with a few well-documented exceptions such as oil consumption on some 2.4L four-cylinders and water pump wear on the 3.5L V6. Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner owners should keep an eye on suspension joints and frame condition. More on our Toyota and Lexus repair page.

Honda and Acura

Engines that run happily for years, a Maintenance Minder that tells you what's due, and V6 timing belts that can't be ignored. See Honda and Acura repair.

Nissan and Infiniti

CVT care is the big one on Altimas, Rogues and Sentras. The VQ V6 in the Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, 350Z, 370Z and Infiniti G and Q models is strong but has its own needs. We also fit Z1 Motorsports parts for Nissan and Infiniti performance builds. See Nissan and Infiniti repair.

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis

Modern Hyundai and Kia models are well built, but some engines have known issues that were covered by recalls or extended warranties, so it pays to check your VIN's history before paying for a repair. See Hyundai and Kia repair.

Subaru

Older 2.5L EJ25 engines, roughly through the early 2010s depending on model, are known for head gasket leaks, so watch for coolant loss or an oil and coolant seep at the engine's sides. Newer FB and FA engines are a different design. Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive also wants all four tires closely matched in size and tread depth, so replacing a single tire takes some care.

Mazda and Mitsubishi

Mazda's Skyactiv engines are generally robust; correct oil and on-time changes are most of what they ask. Mitsubishi Outlanders and Mirages are simple to maintain, with CVT fluid again the item to stay ahead of.

Hybrids, crossovers and the tires underneath

Hybrids from Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Hyundai and Kia are a growing part of the work. Their routine care is what we handle: oil and filters on the gas engine, brakes, brake fluid, suspension, air filters and tires. Regenerative braking means hybrid pads often last a long time, but calipers and slide pins can seize from light use, so they're worth checking. For anything involving the high-voltage system, call first and we'll tell you how we can help.

Most of these vehicles are crossovers now: RAV4s, CR-Vs, Rogues, Tucsons, Sportages, Foresters and CX-5s. They're heavier than the sedans they replaced and they wear tires faster, especially the front pair. We fit all-season and all-terrain options across price points, from Michelin and Bridgestone to value lines like Sailun and Kenda, and a rotation schedule keeps the wear even.

Check engine lights on Asian makes

A check engine light on a Japanese or Korean car usually points to something specific and fixable: an evap leak, an air-fuel ratio sensor, a misfiring coil or a catalytic converter efficiency code. We read the code, then test to find the cause before recommending a part, so you're not paying to replace the wrong thing. Our check engine light diagnostics page walks through how that works.

We're on Richmond Hwy in South Richmond, minutes from I-95 and downtown, serving Richmond, Chesterfield and Henrico. Walk-ins are welcome and same-day service is often available. Common questions

Asian Auto Repair questions, answered

Do you only work on European cars?

No. European cars are a specialty, but Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru and Mazda are routine work for us every week, from oil changes and brakes to diagnostics, cooling system repairs and tires. The process is the same either way: we find the cause, quote it, and you approve it before we start.

Does my CVT need fluid changes if the manual says lifetime?

A lifetime fluid rating assumes gentle driving. Heat, stop-and-go traffic, hills and towing all break CVT fluid down, and these transmissions depend on clean fluid more than most. We'll check the fluid's condition and your maker's schedule and give you a straight recommendation rather than a sales pitch.

How do I know if my engine has a timing belt or a chain?

If your maintenance schedule lists a timing belt replacement interval, you have a belt. Belts are common on Honda and Acura V6s, older Toyota V6s and older Subaru engines; most newer four-cylinders use chains. If you're not sure, send us your VIN or bring the car in and we'll tell you.

Can you replace just one tire on my Subaru?

Sometimes. Subaru's all-wheel drive is sensitive to differences in tire size and tread depth, so one new tire next to three worn ones can strain the drivetrain. We'll measure the other three first. A closely matched used tire, or replacing in a pair or a full set, may be the better answer.

Do you service hybrids?

Yes, for routine service: oil and filters, brake fluid, brakes, suspension, steering and tires on Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Hyundai and Kia hybrids. Hybrid pads often wear slowly but calipers can still stick from light use, so we check them too. For anything involving the high-voltage system, call first and we'll talk it through.

Do you do performance work on Japanese cars?

Yes. We fit Z1 Motorsports parts for Nissan and Infiniti, including the 350Z, 370Z, G35, G37 and Q50 and Q60 platforms, along with performance tires and brake upgrades. Tell us the car and what you want from it and we'll plan the parts with you. We supply the parts we fit.
