Ford work is everyday work here
Ford trucks and SUVs are some of the most common vehicles on Richmond roads, and they're a regular part of our week. We handle the F-150 that tows on weekends, the Super Duty that earns its keep on job sites, the Explorer or Escape doing school runs, and the Transit van that can't afford a day off. Lincoln models get the same attention, since most of them share their engines and electronics with a Ford.
We start with a proper diagnosis: we read every module, look at live data and test the suspect part before we replace anything. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a number before any work starts, and you approve it first.
EcoBoost engines: what to watch for
EcoBoost engines make strong power from small turbocharged displacement, and they reward good maintenance. A few issues come up often enough to know about.
- 3.5 EcoBoost cam phaser and timing chain rattle. Some 2011 to 2017 F-150s develop a rattle for a few seconds on a cold start, often traced to cam phasers and timing chain wear. Ford updated the parts over the years. Left alone, a stretched chain causes rough running and timing codes, so a startup rattle is worth checking early.
- Coolant loss on some 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost engines. Certain Escape, Fusion and related model years are known for coolant finding its way into the cylinders. Signs include a dropping coolant level with no visible leak, white smoke on startup and misfires. Check whether a recall or extended coverage applies to your VIN before paying for engine work.
- Spark plugs and ignition coils. Turbo engines are hard on plugs. Worn plugs and weak coils show up as misfires under load or when towing, and replacing them on schedule prevents most of it.
- Carbon and intake buildup. Direct-injected engines can build carbon on the intake valves over time, which causes rough idle and hesitation. We confirm the cause before recommending any cleaning.
Older trucks and the 5.4 Triton
Plenty of 2004 to 2010 F-150s, Expeditions and Navigators with the 5.4 three-valve V8 are still working hard. These engines are known for cam phaser and timing chain noise, which sounds like a ticking or knocking at idle, often linked to oil condition and oil pressure. Clean oil of the correct grade, changed on time, matters a great deal on this engine.
The 5.4 three-valve is also known for spark plugs that seize or break during removal on some years. It's a job that takes patience and the correct procedure, not brute force. If yours is due for plugs, tell us the year and we'll plan it properly.
Transmissions, 4x4 and drivetrain
10-speed automatic
The 10R80 10-speed in newer F-150s, Expeditions, Rangers, Mustangs and Navigators sometimes draws complaints about harsh or busy shifts. On many trucks the fix starts with checking for software updates and fluid condition, and sometimes resetting the transmission's adaptive learning, before anything mechanical is considered. We test it properly before recommending a repair.
PowerShift dual-clutch
The PowerShift automatic in 2012 to 2016 Focus and Fiesta models is known for shudder, slipping and hesitation from a stop. Clutch wear and the transmission control module are the usual suspects. Check your VIN for extended coverage before deciding on a repair.
4x4 grinding on F-150s
A grinding or clicking from the front wheels while driving in two-wheel drive often points to the integrated wheel end (IWE) system on many F-150s. The cause is usually a vacuum leak or a faulty solenoid rather than a bad hub, and finding the actual leak is cheaper than replacing parts until it goes away.
Trucks, vans and tires that carry the load
Because we're a tire shop too, your F-150 or Super Duty gets tires matched to how you use it: load range, size and tread built for highway miles, job sites or off-road. We fit light-truck and all-terrain lines from Nitto, Toyo, Falken, Cooper, Goodyear and Ironman, mount and balance them in-house, and torque the lugs to spec. See our new tires page for the full list.
Running Transit or E-Series vans for a business? Fleet accounts get priority scheduling so your vans spend less time parked. Brakes, oil service, tires and diagnostics can all happen in one visit, which matters when a van is your income.
If you tow, plan for shorter intervals on transmission fluid, brake fluid and differential oil than the light-duty schedule assumes. Heavy loads and Richmond summer heat both work fluids harder.
Mustang upgrades and every other Ford
We supply and fit AmericanMuscle parts for Mustangs: exhaust, intakes, suspension and brake upgrades, planned so they work together and hold up on the street. We supply the parts we fit, so we don't install customer-supplied parts. If there's a part you've had your eye on, tell us and we'll source it.
We also work on the Bronco and Bronco Sport, Ranger, Edge, Explorer and Expedition, and Lincoln's Navigator, Aviator, Corsair and MKZ. If you also have a Chevy or a Ram in the driveway, see our American car and truck repair page. We're on Richmond Hwy in South Richmond, minutes from I-95, and you can book online with your plate or VIN.
Ready when you are. Call or text (804) 297-6350, or book online and we'll come back with a quote and a time.
