Nissan & Infiniti Repair in Richmond, VA

Altimas, Rogues and Frontiers to G37s, Q50s and Zs. CVT problems diagnosed properly, the known engine issues caught early, and a clear number before any work starts.

The Nissans Richmond actually drives

Nissan is one of the most common makes on Richmond roads: Altima and Sentra commuters, Rogue and Murano family crossovers, Pathfinders, Frontier and Titan pickups, and plenty of Infiniti sedans and SUVs. They're dependable cars when they're maintained, and most of the big repair bills we see trace back to a handful of well-known weak spots that give warning first.

We work on all of them, every week, along with the rest of the Asian makes. You get a proper diagnosis, an explanation of what we found in plain terms, and a price you approve before anything gets done.

CVT shudder, whine and slipping

Most Nissan cars and crossovers from the late 2000s on use a continuously variable transmission (CVT) built by Jatco, including the Altima, Sentra, Rogue, Murano, Versa, Kicks, Pathfinder and several Infinitis. When a CVT starts to wear, the symptoms are usually easy to feel:

  • A shudder or judder when pulling away gently or at low speed
  • A whine or drone that rises with speed
  • RPM flaring without the car picking up speed to match
  • Hesitation, a sudden loss of power or the car going into a reduced-power mode, often on a long climb or a hot day

Not every shudder means a dead transmission. Old or overheated fluid, a fault code from a sensor, or a software issue can produce similar symptoms, so we scan the transmission control module, check fluid condition and temperature data, and road test before anyone talks about replacement. Nissan extended CVT coverage on some models and years, so if the diagnosis does point to the transmission, check your VIN with a Nissan dealer before you pay for a big repair yourself.

CVT fluid service

Nissan CVTs need Nissan's own CVT fluid: NS-2 in older units and NS-3 in most newer ones. A generic multi-vehicle fluid is a real risk. Many owner's manuals list a fluid change under severe-use conditions, and stop-and-go traffic and Richmond summer heat both count. Fresh fluid on schedule is the cheapest thing you can do to keep a CVT healthy.

Engine issues worth knowing

VQ V6 timing chain noise. The 3.5-liter VQ35 in older Altimas, Maximas, Muranos and Pathfinders can develop a whine or whir from worn timing chain guides and tensioner shoes, usually most noticeable between about 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. Some of these engines also burn oil between changes, which speeds up chain wear. Keep the oil full and get a new noise checked early.

Gallery gaskets on VQ35HR and VQ37VHR. Some G37, 370Z, Q60 and later 350Z engines can lose oil pressure at idle when internal oil gallery gaskets fail, sometimes with timing chain rattle. A low oil pressure warning at a hot idle should never be ignored.

Pre-catalytic converters on older QR25 engines. Some 2.5-liter four-cylinders from the early to mid 2000s used pre-cats that can break apart, and debris can damage the engine. A rattle from the exhaust, a catalyst efficiency code or rising oil use are the warning signs, and the fix is a proper replacement converter. Our check engine light diagnostics page explains how we track down codes like these.

Frontier, Xterra, Pathfinder and Titan

Nissan trucks and body-on-frame SUVs have their own list. The best known is the radiator on many 2005 to 2010 automatic Frontiers, Xterras and Pathfinders: the transmission cooler inside the radiator can fail and mix coolant into the transmission fluid, which owners call the "strawberry milkshake." It can ruin the transmission in short order. If yours still has an original radiator from that era, replacing it before it fails is the usual preventive fix.

Titans and Frontiers also see exhaust manifold leaks that tick on a cold start, rear axle seal leaks on some early Titans, and the usual truck wear items: brakes, ball joints, tie rods and light-truck tires sized for the load you carry.

Infiniti and Z performance

Infinitis share a lot with Nissan under the skin, so the same knowledge carries over, with a few of their own. The VR30 twin-turbo V6 in the Q50 and Q60 3.0t uses a water-to-air intercooler with its own electric pump and coolant loop. When that pump fails or the loop runs low, the car pulls power once it's hot. Spark plugs and coils also work hard on these engines, especially on modified cars.

For 370Z, new Z, G37, Q50 and Q60 owners who want more, we fit performance parts from Z1 Motorsports: intakes, exhausts, cooling upgrades and suspension parts. We supply the parts we install, so the parts and the work come from one shop. Manual 370Z owners should also know the clutch slave cylinder is a common failure, and a soft or sticking clutch pedal is the clue.

Common questions

Nissan & Infiniti Repair questions, answered

My Nissan shudders when I pull away. Is the CVT failing?

It might be, but not always. Old or overheated fluid, a sensor fault or a software issue can cause a similar shudder. We scan the transmission module, check fluid condition and road test the car before calling it a transmission failure. If it is the CVT, check your VIN with a Nissan dealer, since some models and years got extended coverage.

How often should Nissan CVT fluid be changed?

Check your owner's manual, which often lists a change interval under severe-use conditions. Short trips, stop-and-go traffic and summer heat all count as severe for most drivers. Use only the Nissan fluid your transmission calls for, NS-2 or NS-3. A fluid service costs far less than a transmission.

What is the strawberry milkshake problem on a Frontier or Xterra?

On many 2005 to 2010 automatic Frontiers, Xterras and Pathfinders, the transmission cooler inside the radiator can crack and let coolant mix with transmission fluid. The fluid turns pink and foamy and the transmission can fail quickly. If yours still has the original radiator, replacing it before it fails is the usual way to protect the transmission.

My G37 shows low oil pressure at idle. What does that mean?

On some VQ35HR and VQ37VHR engines, internal oil gallery gaskets fail and oil pressure drops at a hot idle, sometimes with a timing chain rattle. Don't keep driving on it. Check the oil level, and have the oil pressure tested and the engine inspected so a gasket problem doesn't turn into engine damage.

Can you install Z1 Motorsports parts I already bought?

No. We supply the parts we fit, so one shop is accountable for the parts and the installation. We fit Z1 Motorsports parts for the 370Z, Z, G37, Q50 and Q60, so tell us what you're after and we'll quote it supplied and fitted.

Do you work on Nissan trucks like the Titan and Frontier?

Yes. We handle Titan and Frontier maintenance and repairs, from brakes, ball joints and exhaust manifold leaks to cooling systems and transmission fluid, plus light-truck tires in the right load range for what you tow or haul.
